Special Primary Election
In a low voter turnout Primary Election, voters decided that Newark Mayor Cory Booker would represent the Democrats and Steve Lonegan would represent the Republicans. The two are now set to face off at the Special General Election on October 16, 2013. Booker is going in to the General Election campaign as the favorite.
Tuesday’s summer election, accompanied by rain, did not dramatically prevent voters from getting out to the polls as was predicted. About 9% of New Jersey’s registered voters voted yesterday. In comparison, New Jersey’s 2006 U.S. Senate primary election had a turnout of 8%.
War on Drugs
This week, U.S. Attorney General Holder introduced a shift in the nation’s war on drugs. The plan is similar to initiatives in various states, including New Jersey, that send non-violent drug offenders to rehab instead of jail.
New Jersey Supreme Court
In New Jersey Supreme Court news, the Governor announced this past Monday that he will not nominate Justice Helen Hoens for lifetime tenure. Instead, the Governor said he will nominate Faustino J. Fernandez-Vina to take Hoens’ place.
Next Week
The New Jersey Senate will be holding a voting session on Monday, August 19, 2013. Additionally, the Senate Judiciary Committee is meeting at 10AM also on Monday, August 19, 2013.
